Styled Shoots- Featuring Marybank Farm

Updated: Jun 23, 2022

Well, Hello! It's Jane here, I thought it would be valuable to share my thoughts on the day I unofficially married my best friend, so here goes! When Dani Barlett, an incredible photographer, asked if we wanted to be involved, it was a resounding YES! Dani is one of those people that you instantly can connect with and then she said that she had Katy joining also as another photographer and it was a definite HELL YES! We could not recommend these two higher for photographers and on-the-day cheerleaders! I wish I filmed my reaction to their sneak peek photos- I was literally taken aback and I felt not only mine and Allan’s love in the photos but also Dani and Katy’s in the framing they had chosen and the editing they had done.

Videographer

We have seen the gorgeous videos Rhiannon creates and were just SO excited she was jumping onboard. She is a perfect example of what a videographer should be, present but not in your face and always capturing those special moments. You can tell that she absolutely loves what she does and she will work tirelessly to capture all the fun moments, the stolen moments and moments in-between! We cannot wait to see the full video!!

Dresses and Suits

From stepping into the two dresses with help from Lizzie at Imagine Bridal Lounge gave me the excitement that I can imagine any bride-to-be would feel choosing their beautiful dress. We have always loved playing dress ups but to be chosen several dresses specifically to suit, was very special. For Allan, he felt rather sharp in his suits from Oscar Hunt Tailors, thanks to Steven’s keen eye on which ones would suit him best.

Makeup and hair styling

On the day, I felt SO pampered by Ellouise from @makeupby.ellouise as she painted my face and was there for every touch up after too many ‘face hugs’ with Allan. Now, sweet Caroline from @Carolinemajor_fonsalon. Wow, what a woman and what magic she did to my hair. It still felt like me, but was ‘more glam’ and perfect for a special day. These two are the best friends every gal needs in their life, so what perfect day to have them but on your wedding day!

Venue

When it comes to a venue, we have a bit of a story. We had originally planned this at another location however this was unable to go ahead due to the fire warnings. This was where you saw the magic of styled shoots and the spirit of the Adelaide wedding vendors - the day before, when we found this out, every single person involved was helping to suggest places, make recommendations and call around to see where we could move this to. That is where Marybank came in. And what a venue!! We actually have two weddings here next year, in the same week (by pure chance!) so we were so excited to get to scope out this stunning space. From the versatile space inside full of light, to the exterior of the building, to the decking to the vineyards- this place has it all!

Styling

You know a space is never complete without styling. The styling is what gives the ‘feel’ and ‘atmosphere’ for your wedding day. Laura from Minty Mary Pea Events, is not only an absolutely amazing person but an incredible stylist who provided the gorgeous items for the day. She was able to match the flowers and overall style and feel for the shoot perfectly.

Floristry

Now, the flowers. I meannnnn, wow! What colours, what cohesiveness, what fun Mel from Floyd and Frankie has created. These are just so stunning and really made the day come together. Mel did amazing to accommodate a change of venue and the hot weather so you know you’ve got a florist who can think on their feet for your big day!

Special mentions

There were a few vendors we didn’t get to meet personally on the day but we must shout out to Nutmeg Creative for their beautiful name cards, Spoon and Spatula Banking for the droooooool-worthy cookies and Olive Court Handcrafted for the gorgeous earrings I wore for the first dress (lace). I then wore earrings gifted to me as a bridesmaid a few weeks before for the second dress.

I do need to shout out two more people… our gal Kendie was our On the Day Coordinator, helping to make the day run on time and seamlessly while also moving furniture, being the ultimate hype gal and making sure we all ate. I cannot wait for her to be by my side one day when Allan and I make this married thing official.

And then, Allan, my beautiful man - I am so grateful that you would do a shoot like this with me, not many would and so I don’t take it lightly that you did this. I was so nervous when we first started shooting and you just calmed me down in a way that you always do, and then we just started being our silly, normal selves and that was when we started to have fun!

Last words

In reflection, I wanted to do this styled shoot to give me insight into what it is like being in front of the cameras and to be able to support and prepare our couples. My biggest advice is:

  • Choose photographer and videographers you connect with and feel comfortable with. Can you have a chat and a laugh with them also?

  • Find your zone and ‘bubble’. There were times where I was lost in the ‘bubble’ of Allan and I and I forgot about the multiple cameras and eyes on us. If you naturally cuddle a certain way, do that - you will feel more natural also. Don’t force any positions that don’t feel natural.

  • Keep going. Don’t do a ‘pose’ and then look at your photographer/videographer. Keep going and moving together. They will tell you when you can stop if needed.

  • If your photographer and videographer are being quiet, it means that you are doing everything right and they are capturing the magic. If they need to, they will direct and prompt you. You can also ask them when you book them about their communication styles during photoshoots.

  • Trust your photographer/videographer when they say ‘it’s golden hour time’ and make sure you don’t miss this. We hear that this can often be when speeches are and every photographer/videographer dies a little inside when they see the couple miss this golden moment.

  • Have fun, be silly, use props, surround yourself with those you feel comfortable and just enjoy the moment.

In the wedding industry, styled shoots are such an incredible way for vendors to showcase their styles, visions, creativity and to inspire couples for their weddings. It is also a beautiful way for us to network and get to work with and to know each other more. We are thankful for every single person involved and that we have friends for life now!

Dream it. Plan it. Do it

Jane
